Starting a Watercolor Sketch Journal from Scratch

Ready to begin your sketchbook journaling practice? Learn how to start from scratch with confidence and creativity.

A blank page can be a little intimidating. But it can also be full of promise. Here’s how to begin a sketching journal that feels like home.

1. Choose Your Book

Pick one that lays flat and can handle water. Cold-pressed paper is ideal for texture and absorbency.

2. Start with a Welcome Page

This might be a quote, a swatch of color, or a simple note to your future self. It sets the tone.

3. Create a Color Map

Swatch your paints and label them. This becomes your reference as you paint more pages.

4. Paint What You See

Begin with objects around you. A teacup. A shadow. The view from your window. Small moments build confidence. Don’t like your drawing?  Take note of why and write that down.  Then do the drawing again (and again!) and you’ll learn.

5. Give Yourself Permission

It’s okay if your sketchbook is messy and perhaps full of mistakes. It’s a space for experimenting, not perfection.  Treat it like the playground it is!
